Saw the Yellowjackets at Elmhurst College last Sun nite. New to me, Marcus Baylor on drums. Picked up steam as the set wore on and played some very happening stuff. Very creative and got pretty sick on some of his solo stuff. He fills the drum spot admirably in this Jazz mainstay band. And with Bob Mintzer in this group the emphasis is really on Jazz! Smokin'!!!

Anyone got any background on Marcus Baylor?

I have yet to hear them w Marcus.

I am a huge/staunch/avid AWA rabid Jackets fan of the Ferrante/ Haslip/ Kennedy/ Mintzer period. I am sure MB fills the chair quite admirably, otherwise he wouldn't even be there [& oh yeah, since he's some "big shoes to fill"... ]

Ah well, sorry, guess that doesn't really answer your ? ...

Like the PMetheny Group, this line-up of the YJs gave "[world-beat-] jazz [-fusion]" a GOOD name... ;-)
They def do the jazz, world, & "fusion" idioms justice.

Hey- I saw these guys at the Berks Jazz Fest. They sounded great. Marcus was really good. I was a little surprised by his light touch, but of course he sounded fine...

I also saw Spyro Gyra at Berks Jazz Fest with their new drummer Ludwig Afonso.

On a scale from 1 to 10, the Yellowjackets concert was a 3.5 .... Spyro was a 9.5.

I saw Al Jarreau last week- that was a 12....

Cheers

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">- Wow. Interesting. Yeah, much of the subtlety, richness, finesse, fire, & complexity of the YJs can be lost in a big concert. Check their CDs w Kennedy for the real-deal full effect...

Yeah, cj the light touch was a surprise; a very pleasant one. It reaffirmed for me that you don't need to beat the music into submission for it to be smokin'. There was quite a bit of musical conversation going on up there and no one was shouting.
